Textual Analysis of Music Magazines:

On the 14th of September I began to analyse existing music magazines to allow myself to start to create ideas of what I wanted my magazine to look like. I used the NOTION issue written about 5 Seconds of Summer as I listen that specific style of music; I also liked the fact that the front cover was in black and white.

The more I paid attention to different aspects of the magazine, the more it helped me to formulate and solidify the genre and style I wanted to base my magazine on.  The fact that the Masthead was in Sans-Serif front and was large meant that the magazine was less formal however, the greyscale effect used contradicted this.

While analysing the NOTION front cover, I looked at other magazines such as GQ and Clash to see how their covers differentiated to the one I was analysing. The fact that the NOTION cover features a band made it clear to me that I wanted to have a single person on my cover as it will be easier to photograph and I have more choices with angles on the cover.

On the 23rd of September, I finished the school magazine I started on the 10th. Finishing the magazine made me realise elements of the school magazine I wanted to include in my music magazine. It also got me used to the software that I would be using to create my music magazine meaning I had a detailed knowledge of the programme. It also helped me understand that the lighting and angle in the picture on the front and contents page was important because if the photograph was too light, the masthead would stand out too much; taking the attention away from the picture and if the photograph was too dark, the impact of the masthead would be lost and the picture was the only focus of the front cover.

25th of September 2015

On the 25th of September, I did content analysis of existing magazine covers. This helped me gain a better understanding of what I needed to include on the cover as well as how I wanted the layout of mine to look. Certain colour schemes used on particular contents pages were used to portray different artists as well as staying traditional to the existing magazine, such as Rolling Stone as they have a certain colour scheme used in every issue (red, white and grey). I made me realise the types of colours I wanted to include (red, white and back) to portray my alternative/rock magazine.

7th of October 2015

On the 7th of October, I had a catch up lesson to finish and upload all my work that I hadn’t done as a result of me joining the course late.

12th of October 2015

On the 12th of October, I created a questionnaire in order to conduct research into what I should include on the front page and contents page of my magazine. It helped me understand the type of things I needed to include on my covers as well as considering how I wanted to ask people these questions electronically. I decided to use Social Media as it is a method of communication that the people I intend to ask are familiar with as well as it being easy for me to record the results once I have received them.

23rd of October 2015

In this lesson I began to darft my magazine by using Adobe Photoshop. I used the website DaFont.com to find a font I liked to have as my headline. I also added a Stand First and a Pull Quote. In this lesson I also decided to have my magazine double page as mostly black adn white, including the picture, however the person in the photograph would be in colour.

3rd of November 2015

In this lesson, I added in my columns of text. I made sure they had a black background but made them slightly opaque to ensure view of the picture underneath wasn't restriced too much. I also added another Pull Quote on the opposite side of the page to have on top of the picture.

17th of November 2015

In this lesson I printed out my progress so far and recieved feedbakc from my peers and the teacher in what they believed I could improve on. I changed the text of my article and added the magazine logo in the corner of the page to make it look more interesting.

1st of December 2015

In this lesson, I added my photo to my double page spread. i re-organised the article, headline, stand first and pull quotes to fit well around the picture. I also brightened the picture as it was quite dark and made the spread look flat and a bit boring.

15th of December 2015

This lesson was the lesson in which I compleated my double page spread. I realised it was very difficult to see the black text over the top of the picture so I made it white. I also added a white shadow to my headline - 'Jodie Jones'. This made it stand out more and become more noticible on the page. After getting the last thoughts from my peers, i did a final printed out of my magazine and was pleased with it.
