Double Page Spread Comparisons

Photography/ Mise en Scene:

The photography in each double-page spread is different; despite the fact they’re from the same magazine. The Greenday spread has a picture that is featured over the fold line and has been taken so there is extra space around the picture to allow room for the actual article itself. The fold is s

– describing their image as a band. Whereas, the Dave Grohl spread is a medium-close up, most likely because he isn’t with his band (the Foo Fighters) so he is the only one being featured. Unlike the Greenday spread, the photograph of Grohl is on one page leaving no room an article meaning that it had to be placed on the following page.

Headline and Standfirst:

The headlines in each article are the same font and roughly the same size in each. This is probably because they are from the same magazine company which shows a theme in each of their issues. The headline is simple – the artist’s name which makes it easy for the reader to depict the artist they want to read about. The Standfirst in each article is only a sentence long. This makes it even easier for the reader to decide whether or not they wish to read the article and don’t waste too much time on reading something they aren’t interested in. A result of both articles being made by the same company is that the Standfirsts are similar because the magazine knows what is best for their image. The font of the Standfirsts is smaller than the headline, but somewhat bigger than the text that is the main body of the article – this is the same in both examples.

Columns/Amount of Text:

The Greenday article has two columns of text – one on each side of the page. This is because the picture is the main focus of the article and takes up the most space. The Dave Grohl article has two columns of writing as well but the width of the text is bigger because it can take up the whole page due to the fact that there are no pictures. The questions, in each article, asked to the artists are written in bold, while the replies are written in normal text. This is to draw attention to the questions and make them stand out from the text in the article. Both articles also have the names of other artist’s mentions in their responses highlighted in yellow; this is most likely to draw attention to new artists that the reader could be interested in. There are also pictures of the artist’s “musical roadmap” showing their favourite albums and pictures of them. This is to; again, introduce the reader to more bands and singers that they could be interested in.

Pull Quote:

The pull quote in both articles are shown in a pink-fading to white speak bubble with black text. The original colour of the speech bubble draws attention to the artist’s views on their musical history and gives the reader an insight into what the article may entail.

lightly to the right of Bille Joe Armstong’s face to ensure that it is visible and no one is cut out from the picture. The long shot used shows the whole band; it also shows their clothes which are eccentric.

The designs shown above will help me in achieving an original DPS due to the fact that the bands or person shown are often know to be original themselves. I love the fact that the picture in the Green Day article features across two pages as it makes it unique and eye-catching.
